We worked to increase attendance at meetings, we had one transfer and five new initiates. We revised our Chapter Rules, and met our goals for this biennium. Our community project was to help provide children living at Turning Point Women's Shelter with school supplies and pre-school children with learning materials. Our other projects were to help reduce our carbon footprint by reducing paper usage, recycling materials, composting, and learning about going organic. We received recognition for this both years from Eta State. Other Eta State and DKG projects that we supported were Schools in Africa by sending money to help teachers to learn. Another project was to help early career educators. We did this by giving eleven beginning career educators a stipend to get needed supplies for their classrooms. One of our local projects was to use the proceeds from our Christmas Auction, to give two Grant-in-aids for $1,000 each to Katie Steeb from Union County who is going to Queens College in Charlotte, and to Juan McKenzie from Mecklenburg County who is going to go to UNC-Greensboro. Thanks to everyone's hard work, Alpha Zeta received a Silver Award and an Award of Distinction for our achievements. Alpha Zeta also received a Recognition of Newsletter Excellence. This could not have been done without our editor, Kim Warr who does an excellent job. Region VIII with Alpha Zeta's help received an Award for the Highest Percentage of Contributions to Headquarters.

This was a very busy and challenging two years for Alpha Zeta Chapter. Alpha Zeta Strategic Action Plan and Alpha Zeta Chapter Standing Rules were revised and updated. All objectives were met: some to a lesser degree and some to a greater degree than anticipated. Alpha Zeta members took an active part in the planning and executing the Eta State Convention in Charlotte 2013. Diane Maye created 30 beautiful table arrangements for the Sunday Brunch and Peggy Harris welcomed the guests to the convention dressed as Queen Charlotte. Other members contributed in time and effort to make the convention a great experience for our DKG Sisters across the state.
Alpha Zeta's newsletter "From A to Z" received an Eta State Newsletter Excellence Award for both years, thanks to Kim Warr, our Communications Chairperson. The Eta State Achievement Award was presented to Alpha Zeta Chapter recognizing the "Excellent Work in Carrying out the Goals of my DKG Society, thanks to the collective efforts of all the AZ members.

During the 2018-2019 year, the chapter continued its pursuit of the distinction of Excellence in Chapter Achievement. To attain this goal, the chapter continued several of their initiatives, but did add a few to enhance membership participation. The Grant-in-Aid Scholarship and the “Wishful Thinking” grants were once again a primary focus for the chapter and their outreach to assist a teacher hopeful and two beginning teachers in meeting the needs of their students. The Chapter Strategic Plan was revised through the Executive Board, voted on and approved by the members. Ms. Nancy Smith, Region VIII Director, visited the chapter during our February meeting.
In order to provide members an opportunity to socialize outside of our four chapter meetings, a few of the members attended a play presented by the Union County Playmakers. Those who attended enjoyed the evening out with their sisters and friends. In March of 2019, Alpha Zeta lost beloved member, Jane Clawson, who will always be remembered for her wit, humor and love of Louise Napier’s artwork among many other things. In April of 2019, Alpha Zeta inducted Dr. Pascale Glenn into the chapter.
Five members attended the Eta State Convention in Hickory where Dr. Wanda Allen and Dr. Rachel Clarke represented Alpha Zeta as honorable candidates for the Golden Key and Rising Star Awards, respectively. At the convention, Deb Christensen also represented Alpha Zeta and Eta State as Chair of the Communications Committee and served as a workshop presenter and facilitator. Alpha Zeta attained the Excellence in Communications Award for our “A to Z” newsletter and our website thanks to Deb’s continued work. We also attained the distinction of Excellence in Chapter Achievement as well.
The biennium of 2019-2020 was busy as well even with the interruption of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Before the pandemic ground our year to a halt, Alpha Zeta was still well on the way to show the “GROWth” that NC DKG State President, Dr. Teresa Cowan, wanted for all chapters across the state. The chapter again raised funds for the Grant-in-Aid scholarship and the two “Wishful Thinking” grants. While we were able to extend the “Wishful Thinking” grants, we were not able to extend the Scholarship grant as the schools closed before the seniors had a chance to submit applications. We will hopefully extend a larger amount next year. In looking to raise additional funding for these grants and scholarship, the chapter requested a vendor table at Convention to sell keychains and clipboards as well as conduct a 50-50 raffle, but these items will need to keep until next year’s Convention. In November, Alpha Zeta sisters gathered to support member, Dr. Sylvia Little-Sweat, as she was a part of a program at Wingate University that combined music with the poetry of Emily Dickinson.
Chapter Rules were revised and a Marketing Plan created through the Executive Board, voted on and approved by the members. Funds were also raised for Operation Arc Angel, an initiative to provide needed and wanted items to individuals with disabilities at Christmastime. Members also met the 101 Donations Challenge set forth by the NC DKG Educational Foundation and raised funds for Schools for Africa and Dollars for Dorian. In February, NC DKG State President, Dr. Teresa Cowan, visited with our chapter and provided a motivational speech about giving to and growing with DKG. It was after this that the AZ calendar came to a halt. Four new members, Dr. Elizabeth Mitcham, Amy Herlihy, Missy Howard and Michelle Goode, were to be inducted at our April meeting, but due to the pandemic, it has been pushed to September. Six members were to attend Convention in May, but again, this gathering like so many, was cancelled.
Dr. Rachel Clarke submitted a proposal to present a Globalization workshop, but was unable to present due to the cancellation. Again, we submitted Dr. Wanda Allen and Dr. Rachel Clarke as the nominees from AZ for the Golden Key and Rising Star Awards. Alpha Zeta did show “GROWth” in chapter achievement this year as they attained the level of Superior and yet again received the Excellence in Communication Award.

The 2020-2022 Biennium was marked by a continued partial shutdown due to COVID-19 infections. Meetings were held in a hybrid fashion with some members joining in person and some joining through Zoom. One meeting was entirely virtual due to difficulty in finding a room with enough space to socially distance for a meeting. Through the difficulties Alpha Zeta continued to meet and conduct business as a chapter.
